Rethinking What an EMR Can Be
Commercial electronic medical record systems cost healthcare organizations anywhere from $5,000 to over $100,000 per year in licensing fees alone. For organizations doing medical outreach in places like rural Uganda, those numbers aren't just prohibitive. They're absurd. To further complicate matters, the requirements for running an EMR in remote settings often has it own set of challenges that most EMR software is unable to address. So we built our own.
DH Field EMR was born out of our medical outreach work in Uganda, where we needed a system that could handle the realities of field medicine: unreliable electricity, intermittent internet, multiple clinic sites, and teams working across remote communities. Nothing on the market fit. The tools that came close cost more than our entire annual operating budget. We built DH Field EMR for ourselves. Now we're making it available to every organization doing similar work - completely free.
Why Is This Free?
Because healthcare organizations working in the communities that need them most shouldn't have to choose between quality record-keeping and the cost of the software to do it.
The EMR industry charges organizations thousands of dollars per year for software licenses. Many systems require expensive servers, dedicated IT staff, and complex implementations that assume reliable infrastructure. That model doesn't work for a mobile clinic in rural settings.
DH Field EMR takes a different approach
1. No licensing fees. Not now, not ever. The software is free and open source.
2. No expensive servers. Each organization uses a free-tier cloud database (Supabase) that they control completely.
3. No IT department required. A built-in setup wizard walks you through everything in about 15 minutes.
4. No internet dependency. The app works fully offline and syncs when connectivity is available.
5. No vendor lock-in. Your data lives in your own database. You own it. We never see it.
6. We believe that the organizations doing the hardest work in the hardest places deserve tools that match their mission, not invoices that undermine it.
