From 2020 to 2022, Damico Health has made substantial progress in advancing preventative education and healthcare services. Our primary focus has been on disease prevention, which is more cost-effective, efficient, and yields better long-term outcomes. We have implemented various strategies, including educational sessions designed to increase health literacy among the communities we serve. These sessions cover critical health topics such as malaria, typhoid, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), family planning, and general hygiene. By explaining how these diseases occur and providing actionable prevention steps, we have empowered communities to take control of their health.
Building on our preventative education sessions, we have emphasized continuous patient education within our clinics. Despite the challenge of seeing over 300 patients daily, we have increased our staff to improve throughput and allow our team to spend more time educating patients. Our physicians now demonstrate physical therapy maneuvers to alleviate disabling pain and explain the underlying causes of conditions to prevent future occurrences. Our pharmacy team has more time to counsel patients on medication use and adherence, emphasizing the importance of completing antibiotic courses to avoid resistance.
Recognizing the critical need for quality obstetric and gynecological care, we launched the Kiernan Women’s Health Initiative in partnership with Wings for Women. This collaboration has significantly bolstered our preventative care and education efforts. Services provided include family planning, cervical cancer screening, obstetric care, nutrition, and educational materials. This partnership has had a profound positive impact on women’s health in our communities.
As our organization expanded, it became clear that formal incorporation and obtaining tax-exempt status with the IRS were necessary to sustain our growth. Achieving recognition as a 501(c)(3) organization was a lengthy process, but it has enabled us to accept donations and partner more effectively with other NGOs. This status has been crucial in advancing our mission and expanding our impact.
From 2020 to 2022, Damico Health has served over 10 communities, reaching more than 2,000 patients. We conducted over 100 educational sessions, impacting more than 1,000 individuals, and administered over 200 vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever and HPV. Our preventative education and patient care initiatives have led to an increase in patient follow-up and continuity of care, significantly improving health outcomes in the regions we serve.
The years 2020 to 2022 have been transformative for Damico Health. Our focus on preventative education, patient care, and women’s health services, combined with our legal incorporation, has laid a solid foundation for future growth. We remain committed to our mission of providing high-quality, sustainable healthcare to underserved populations, and we look forward to continuing our work with the communities we serve and our global partners.
